I know illegal immigrants and unauthorized people do not belong in the country, but when it comes to children it's something else. I agree with every child no matter who they are and where they come from, they should have access to free information. In my sight, I believe these children will make the future happen. They’ll change it for the better or the worse. Unauthorized children should be given a chance till college. If they are doing good in school, they should have a chance to go to college. They shouldn’t be charged with extra fees or hidden fees. They should be charged the same as a regular person who has also been learning in the same country for 18 years. However, that’s not to say that the rule should change for the unauthorized people. They should, of course, try for legal immigration. I believe if they are not going to school they should be handled differently. They should prosecute their children but give them a chance to prove themselves. A child going to school whi...

Douglas Massey, “People and Places: The New American Mosaic”; Massey, “Why Does Immigration Occur? A Theoretical Synthesis”; Roger Waldinger, “How the Other Half Works”

America of course is seen as a oasis in a mirage. It seen as the only place to go to seek new opportunities. Immigrants from all over the world come to America but its especially high from Central and South America since its closer to the USA. So as people migrate to US, they settle down in the lower parts. There settlement there as had an influence on the people and culture. Its more of a cultural infusion. Immigration occurs when people want to better themselves and their children. They get these jobs to support their families. Men go to work and earn bread. While the women stay home and cook, clean and look after the children. That’s what men and women would do back in the day. Although we can say immigration has had its positive effects in America. They uneducated workers did have skills or developed skills. They’ve built the modern foundation for America, and its future. Therefore, it’s safe to say that old immigrants are not the problem, it’s the new ones. They don’t come in for...

Roger Daniels, “LBJ and the End of the Quota System” in Guarding the Golden Door; Samuel Huntington, “The Hispanic Challenge”

There is no problem with legal immigration. Everyone wants to come in and have a new opportunity. Immigration creates diversity in the area. However, there should be a limit. A country and its government could only control and hold so many people. After a time it becomes a problem in the country the immigrants are coming in because these people need jobs. There’s nothing wrong with that but however, there are other people who need jobs as well. Especially a citizen of the country. Not every citizen in the country has an advantage and so low paying jobs or jobs that don’t require education are available so they can make a living. I believe it’s unfair that immigrants have more of an advantage than the citizens of this country. Legal immigrants are not the only problem. There are illegal immigrants that enter the country illegally. There is a thing called immigration theft. They steal the benefits and aids that the citizens from the country deserve. They might as well take their jobs to...

Seyla Benhabib, “Introduction” in Democracy and Difference: Changing Boundaries of the Political; Jürgen Habermas, “Three Normative Models of Democracy”; Carol Gould, “Diversity and Democracy: Representing Differences”

In the end, Democracy has worked best for the United States Constitution. It simple but democracy is very complex. There are foundations and rules of a democracy ruled and state and there are people who still question its purpose and how it still works and affects the people. So democracy kind od contradicts its because democracy even questions itself for its legitimacy. If there are people who know the law and rules that question democracy, imagine the people who don’t know. The people who don’t know only might think and view this form government in a negative way because they believe their freedom is not actually free and their voices are not being heard. That’s not entirely the case because the only reason the way democracy might fail today is that of today's leaders and how they abuse the system. One group of people is being abused while the other group is being nourished. It's like favoritism. I believe democracy is good at where it's at today, but it’s the leaders th...

David Harvey, “Neoliberalism as Creative Destruction”; Robert W. Cox, “Global Perestroika”

I do agree and believe that Neoliberalism is a form of creative destruction. There is no balance in the economy and the government has no control. This allows for the imbalance between private owners and the government on how money flows. The same thing with perestroika, there is no central planning that has government control so the people (especially private business owners) are free to do what they want with the economy. They control the economy, In a time of war, that’s when chaos ensues because the government does have the money for supplies and troops. There is no agriculture, so people starve. There is food but people earn so little under these private owners, so they cant earn food. To conclude I agree neoliberalism and perestroika is a good way to destroy and cause an imbalance to the economy.

Excerpts from: Mario Puzo, The Fortunate Pilgrim; Maxine Hong Kingston, The Woman Warrior

These are both great stories and I got lost in it. I don’t have very much to say but as a newcomer going to new places, it’s definitely going to be bound to experience stereotypical views. As time passes and one fits in, those stereotypical views are bound to disappear. However, the cultural practices are not disappearing but to infuse with another culture.

Rogers Smith “Beyond Tocqueville, Myrdal, and Hartz: The Multiple Traditions in America”; Judith Shklar “American Citizenship: The Quest for Inclusion”

Having an American Citizenship was kind of like achieving the American dream. It should a sense of the dignity of working hard, having self-achievement and having good morals. Having American citizenship not only meant something to those who had it but it was a representation of social status and it meant that you had a place in this country and you are somewhat important. American citizenship was more like an ideology that was used to separate those who were educated and hard working at the times vs those who would work blue collar jobs and were not educated. Although everyone had a chance to become a citizen it excluded women. The ones who were mostly granted citizenship as men. Back then it was important for men to have status and so having this title was proof of that. However, today having the American Citizenship is a joke today. I think it's coming to the point where it's not going to have any meaning. Illegal immigrants and non-American citizens have been getting more ...

T.H. Marshall, “Citizenship and Social Rights”; Michael Mann, “Ruling Class Strategies and Citizenship”; Charles Tilly “Where Do Rights Come From?” Frederick Douglass “What to the Slave is the Fourth of July?”

I think the Fourth of July can mean nothing to a slave. Whether a slave wanted to be associated or wanted to be associated with America getting their independence from Britain is up to them. At that time slaves didn’t really know much about America's independence from Britain let alone the constitution. There were an activist and black activist who can read and write. Just how America has fought the British for their independence is the same when these activists fought for the freedom and independence of slaves. Even after freedom, the freed slaves fought for their rights. They kept fighting and fighting until the constitution was changed and equal rights amongst all men no matter what race was equal. Up to this day, I believe those who complain about the Fourth of July is a holiday that America got its freedom is just looking for a way to victimize themselves with. They want a change in their own beneficial good. It's like a hate crime for non-blacks. Just like 3 rd wave fem...

Wilson Carey McWilliams, The Idea of Fraternity in America

The extreme Christians now have power in the U.S government and it is becoming more similar to a more totalitarian Christian Nazi rules, and they talk about some of the similarities. Then they talk about Trump being a fascist and attacking for people and minorities. These people have rights but it's being taken away. Their rights have become more an of privilege that they must earn. And when Trump takes away their rights and these people can’t have to say or revolt there will be no sort of resistance and it shows a fascist-ruled leader and government. I feel like that what Trump is becoming and if he continues to do what he is doing we might actually see what Chris Hedges was saying. Once these fascist rulers find a loophole, they will abuse it.

G.K. Chesterton, “What is America?” in What I Saw in America; Randolph Bourne, “Transnational America”

America has become more of a melting pot today then it was back then. The diversity that can be found in the United States is almost greater than the rest of the world. There was of course Native Americans but the “True Americans” were the pilgrims that came from Britain, then followed by the immigrants of Scandinavia, Holland, and Germany. I don’t think it was considered a melting pot in the early Americas because they were considered European and white/Caucasian. Although they had many reasons to come to America, one main one was freedom. They wanted to escape prosecution from their home countries and wanted to find new opportunities. As time goes on and we get into the 1920, America has become more of a melting point and is view differently across world especially the European nations. As the United States has made its changes, more people from across the world started to move to America because of opportunities they can seize and take advantage of. The United States have advanced ...

Aristotle, The Politics, Book III

Aristotle talks about citizenship and the balance between the people and the government. Citizens should be allowed to run and serve and judge and make decisions in the constitution. Although not any citizen should be allowed to run but a citizen who is well educated and has a good virtue. I agree with Aristotle because a good virtue educated citizen can make the right decisions for not only the construction but for the well being for the people/community as well. This prevents tyranny from happening again and allows for a more balanced state of power. No one has supreme power and power in the government is balanced respectively.
